The Double Nine Patch quilt block pattern repeats the classic nine-patch idea at two scales. Small checkerboards alternate with larger plain squares, giving this traditional design room for both scraps and a contrasting background.

Method
Piecing steps
Step 1: Cut 25 accent and 20 background small squares at 1 1/2". Strip piecing is faster: cut strips 1 1/2" wide and sew strip sets before sub-cutting.
Step 2: Make 5 small nine patches with accent squares in the corners and centers, pressing toward the accent. Each should measure 3 1/2".
Step 3: Cut 4 light plain squares at exactly 3 1/2". Each small nine patch must also measure exactly 3 1/2"; if it does not, correct the seam allowance rather than resizing the plain squares.
Step 4: Lay out three rows: nine patch, plain, nine patch / plain, nine patch, plain / nine patch, plain, nine patch.
Step 5: Sew rows, pressing toward the plain squares, then join the rows. The block should measure 9 1/2".
