How the charts are figured
Cutting notes
- Squares and rectangles
- Finished size plus 1/2" on each side: a 1/4" seam on every edge.
- Half-square triangles
- Parent square is the finished leg plus 7/8", cut once on the diagonal. Each square yields 2.
- Quarter-square triangles
- Parent square is the finished long side plus 1 1/4", cut twice on the diagonal. Each yields 4.
- Flying geese
- The goose is a quarter-square triangle of the long side; the two sky pieces are half-square triangles of the short side.
- Fractional sizes
- Some sizes don't land on an eighth (12" on a 7-unit grid is 1.714" per unit). Cuts are rounded up to the next 1/8" and marked; trim sewn units to the size given in the steps.
- Seam allowance
- Everything assumes an accurate 1/4". Sew one test unit and measure before batch piecing.
