Road to Oklahoma Quilt Block
Also known as Road to Oklahoma (trapezoid version)
Part of: Four Patch Quilt BlocksHalf Square Triangle Quilt BlocksQuilt Blocks For Beginners
Road to Oklahoma sets a diagonal chain between two broad contrasting shapes. This four-grid version pieces the traditional trapezoid areas from squares and HSTs so no special cutting template is needed.
Version note: Additional straight seams replace the reference's one-piece trapezoids without changing the colored silhouette.

Method
Piecing steps
Step 1: Subcut the HST parent squares once diagonally as listed in the chart. Sew contrasting triangles along their long edges and square each small unit to 3 1/2", keeping the diagonal centered.
Step 2: Cut the plain squares from the chart and arrange all sixteen positions before sewing. Keep the accent squares on opposite outside corners.
Step 3: The dark squares and adjacent HSTs form the long outer shapes; the background squares complete their mirrored partners. Follow the diagram rather than reversing a single HST.
Step 4: Sew four rows, pressing adjacent rows in opposite directions. Join the rows and match the diagonal chain intersections.
Step 5: Join the sections with a 1/4-inch seam allowance, matching the marked intersections. Press and check the unfinished block measures 12 1/2" square.
