Method
Piecing steps
Step 1: Cut 1 medium center square at 6 1/2" and 4 background corner squares at 3 1/2".
Step 2: Cut 1 background quarter-square triangle parent and cut it twice on the diagonal for 4 background goose triangles.
Step 3: Cut 4 dark half-square triangle parents and cut each once on the diagonal for 8 dark sky triangles; these become the 8 star points.
Step 4: Sew a dark sky triangle to one short side of a background goose triangle, press toward the dark, then add a second dark triangle to the other side. Make 4 flying geese units and trim to 6 1/2" by 3 1/2", leaving 1/4" above the goose tip.
Step 5: Sew a goose unit to the top and bottom of the center square with the background goose pointing inward toward the center, so the dark points frame the square. Press toward the center.
Step 6: Sew a corner square to each end of the remaining two geese, press toward the squares, and add them to the sides. The block should measure 12 1/2".
