Method
Piecing steps
Step 1: Join a dark and a background QST along a short edge, then add the large light HST to complete a 4 1/2" square unit. Make four.
Step 2: Sew a background rectangle beside each star unit to form four 6 1/2" by 4 1/2" sections.
Step 3: Arrange the sections around the small center square. Attach the center to the first section for only half of that seam.
Step 4: Add the second, third and fourth sections around the center with full seams. Finish the first partial seam to close the block.
Step 5: Join the sections with a 1/4-inch seam allowance, matching the marked intersections. Press and check the unfinished block measures 10 1/2" square.
