Five Patch Quilt Block
Also known as Glorified Nine Patch (chain version)
Part of: Nine Patch Quilt BlocksQuilt Blocks Using Squares And RectanglesEasy Quilt BlocksQuilt Blocks For Beginners
Five Patch is the name of this nine-grid chain design, not a count of its smallest squares. Four small nine-patches and connecting bars surround an open center, giving a different layout from Double Nine Patch.
Version note: Grid corrected from 5 to 9 to represent the smallest patches. Selected the named chain block; the generic five-by-five checkerboard is a different design.

Method
Piecing steps
Step 1: Sew four small nine-patches with background corners and centers, using the chart's small squares. Each unit measures 3 1/2".
Step 2: Join each dark side bar to a wider background rectangle to make a 3 1/2" square side unit.
Step 3: Arrange the nine-patches at the corners and the large plain square in the center. Turn each bar toward the center so the bars frame it.
Step 4: Sew three rows, pressing toward the larger background patches, then join the rows.
Step 5: Join the sections with a 1/4-inch seam allowance, matching the marked intersections. Press and check the unfinished block measures 9 1/2" square.
