Part of: Four Patch Quilt BlocksHalf Square Triangle Quilt BlocksQuilt Blocks For BeginnersTwo Color Quilt Blocks
Sugar Bowl is a compact basket: a large dark triangle bowl edged with small triangle points, a dark corner square and two triangle feet. The four-grid version is quick to cut and makes a good two-fabric sampler block.
Version note: Assemble as sections: top two rows first, then the right foot and bottom row.

Method
Piecing steps
Step 1: Cut the HST parent squares once diagonally. Sew each contrasting pair along the long edge, press toward the darker fabric and square the unit to 3 1/2", keeping the diagonal running corner to corner.
Step 2: Make the large HST for the bowl and square it to 6 1/2".
Step 3: Sew two small HSTs to the right of the dark square for the top row, then add the tall background rectangle. Sew two HSTs into a column for the left side of the bowl.
Step 4: Join the left column to the large HST, then sew this section under the top row, keeping the tall rectangle on the right edge.
Step 5: Make the bottom row from the long background rectangle, a foot HST and the corner square, and sew the second foot HST beneath the tall rectangle.
Step 6: Join the rows with a 1/4-inch seam allowance, matching each seam intersection. Press and check the unfinished block measures 12 1/2" square.
