Lover's Lane crosses two diagonal lanes of dark triangles through four square-in-a-square diamonds. The center and corners use the same small triangle pairs, so the lanes run unbroken corner to corner.

Method
Piecing steps
Step 1: Cut the HST parent squares once diagonally. Sew each contrasting pair along the long edge, press toward the darker fabric and square the unit to 2 1/2", keeping the diagonal running corner to corner.
Step 2: Make four square-in-a-square units by sewing dark corner squares onto background squares; trim to 4 1/2".
Step 3: Make the five two-by-two lane units from two background squares and two HSTs each. Check the diagram: the center and the upper-left and lower-right corners slant one way, the other two corners the opposite way.
Step 4: Lay out three rows: lane units at the corners and center, diamonds between them.
Step 5: Join the rows with a 1/4-inch seam allowance, matching each seam intersection. Press and check the unfinished block measures 12 1/2" square.
