Mississippi Quilt Block
Part of: Nine Patch Quilt BlocksState Quilt BlocksTwo Color Quilt Blocks
Mississippi turns four side squares with small background corners around a plain center, giving the medium fabric a gentle spin. It uses only squares and stitch-and-flip corners, so there are no loose bias triangles to handle.
Version note: Corner triangle legs are half the side-patch width, as measured on the reference drawing.

Method
Piecing steps
Step 1: Cut the medium squares and the small background corner squares from the chart. Draw a diagonal on each corner square.
Step 2: Place corner squares on the upper-right and lower-left corners of four medium squares. Sew on the lines, trim and press out. Each unit measures 4 1/2".
Step 3: Lay out the medium corner squares, the four pieced side units and the background center. Rotate each side unit so the corners spin in the same direction as the diagram.
Step 4: Sew the squares into three rows of three, pressing alternate rows in opposite directions.
Step 5: Join the rows with a 1/4-inch seam allowance, matching each seam intersection. Press and check the unfinished block measures 12 1/2" square.
