Method
Piecing steps
Step 1: Cut the QST parents twice diagonally and the HST parents once diagonally.
Step 2: Sew one background and one light QST triangle along a short edge to make a pieced triangle. Join it to a dark HST triangle along the long edge. Make four units and square each to 4 1/2".
Step 3: Lay out the units with the background triangle on the outer edge, rotating each a quarter turn so the dark halves spin around the center.
Step 4: Add the four background corner squares and the background center, then sew three rows.
Step 5: Join the rows with a 1/4-inch seam allowance, matching each seam intersection. Press and check the unfinished block measures 12 1/2" square.
