Rising Star Quilt Block
Part of: Star Quilt BlocksFlying Geese Quilt Blocks
Rising Star nests a small sawtooth star inside a large one, so the points of both stars line up along the same diagonals. Every unit is a square or flying goose, which keeps it straight-seam throughout even though the inner star is half the scale of the outer.

Method
Piecing steps
Step 1: Make four small flying geese for the inner star: deep goose triangles with dark sky triangles. Trim each to 3 1/2" by 2".
Step 2: Lay the inner star in three rows: deep corner squares and geese around the medium center square. Sew it into a 6 1/2" square.
Step 3: Make four large geese with background goose triangles and dark sky triangles. Trim each to 6 1/2" by 3 1/2".
Step 4: Sew a large goose to the top and bottom of the inner star, points facing out. Add background corner squares to the ends of the other two geese and sew them to the sides.
Step 5: Join the rows with a 1/4-inch seam allowance, matching each seam intersection. Press and check the unfinished block measures 12 1/2" square.
